ZechariahChapter 8
Zechariah Chapter 8: Meaning
God promises to come back to Jerusalem, fill it with joy, and one day people from all nations will seek Him there.
Summary
God tells Zechariah how much He loves Jerusalem. He says He is very jealous for the city and plans to come back and live there. The city will be called the City of Truth, and the mountain where God lives will be called the Holy Mountain. Old men and women will sit peacefully in the streets, and children will be playing everywhere.
God gives a list of ten promises about how things will get better. He says the people should not be afraid, but should be strong and keep working. He also tells them to do what is right: speak the truth, judge fairly, and do not plot evil against each other.
Finally, God promises that the sad fasting days will become happy festival days. People from many nations and cities will come to Jerusalem looking for God. They will say, 'Let us go with you, because we have heard that God is with you.'
Historical Context
Zechariah gave these promises around 520 BC, while the temple in Jerusalem was still being rebuilt. The Jewish people were few in number and the city was still mostly in ruins after the Babylonian destruction. This chapter was meant to give them hope.
God's promise that nations from all over the world would come to seek Him in Jerusalem pointed to a future that was much bigger than rebuilding one city. Christians see this as pointing to how people of all nations would one day be drawn to God through Jesus.
