Milcah
Milcah, the daughter of Haran and wife of Nahor, was the mother of Bethuel and the grandmother of Rebekah (Gen.11.29; 22.20,23; 24.15,24,47).
Biography
Milcah was a woman of considerable importance in the patriarchal narratives, serving as a key link in the genealogical chain that produced the chosen line of Israel. She was the daughter of Haran, Abraham's deceased brother, making her Abraham's niece (Genesis 11:29). She married Nahor, Abraham's other brother, and bore him eight sons, including Bethuel (Genesis 22:20-23). Through Bethuel, Milcah became the grandmother of Rebekah, who would become the wife of Isaac and mother of Jacob. When Abraham's servant sought a bride for Isaac, Rebekah's lineage through Milcah was specifically noted (Genesis 24:15, 24, 47), emphasizing the importance of maintaining family connections within the covenant community. Milcah's fertility stood as a counterpoint to Sarah's prolonged barrenness, yet both women ultimately contributed to God's promises.
Significance
Milcah occupies a crucial position in God's redemptive plan as the matrilineal ancestor of Rebekah, and thus of Jacob and all Israel. Her marriage to Nahor maintained the family bonds that would later prove essential when Abraham sought a wife for Isaac from among his own kindred rather than from the Canaanites (Genesis 24:4). The repeated mention of Milcah's name in connection with Rebekah's identity (Genesis 24:15, 24, 47) signals that God was providentially working through extended family networks to preserve the covenant line. Milcah demonstrates that God's purposes often advance through women whose faithfulness in marriage and motherhood shapes the destiny of nations, even when they stand outside the direct spotlight of the narrative.
