Song of Solomon Chapter 3: Meaning

The young woman searches the city at night for her beloved, and then a grand royal wedding parade is described.

Summary
The young woman has a dream or a restless night. She lies in her bed missing her beloved and decides to go look for him in the city. She walks through the streets and asks the guards if they have seen him. Then she finds him and holds on tight. She brings him to her mother's house and will not let go. The chapter then shifts to a grand scene. A large, beautiful procession is coming through the wilderness. It is King Solomon's wedding parade. A special carriage called a palanquin is described, it is made from the finest wood from Lebanon, with silver posts and gold decorations, and a purple seat. Warriors from Israel guard it with their swords. The young women of Jerusalem are invited to look at King Solomon. He is wearing a crown his mother gave him on his wedding day. It is a joyful and special occasion.

Historical Context

In ancient times, royal weddings were huge celebrations. Kings would travel in decorated carriages with guards around them. This showed their power and importance.

The city streets in ancient Israel were patrolled by night watchmen who kept people safe. A woman going out at night alone to search for someone was unusual, which shows how strong her love was. The wedding procession described here paints a picture of love being honored in the grandest possible way.
