Song of SolomonChapter 4
Song of Solomon Chapter 4: Meaning
The man tells his beloved how beautiful she is, using vivid pictures from nature, and she invites him to come to her.
Summary
In this chapter, the man talks about how beautiful his beloved is. He goes through her features one by one. He says her eyes are like doves, her hair like a flock of goats moving down a hillside, and her lips like a scarlet ribbon. He uses many pictures from the world around him to say just how lovely she is. He ends by saying she is completely beautiful, with no flaw at all.
Then he calls to her, asking her to come with him away from the mountains of Lebanon. He says she has won his heart with just one look. He compares her love to wine and her perfume to the best spices.
Finally, he describes her as a locked garden, a private and protected place. He lists all the wonderful plants and spices in her garden: pomegranates, henna, spikenard, saffron, and more. The chapter ends with the young woman asking the winds to blow through her garden and spread its sweet smell, so her beloved will come in and enjoy it.
Historical Context
In ancient times, people often wrote love poems using nature to describe beauty. This style of poem was common in Egypt and other parts of the ancient world. The pictures used here, like flocks of goats, towers, and spices, were beautiful and meaningful to people living in ancient Israel.
The idea of a locked garden was a powerful image. Gardens in the ancient world were often walled in to protect rare and valuable plants. Using this image for the beloved showed that she was treasured and safe.
