Song of SolomonChapter 8

Song of Solomon Chapter 8: Meaning

The young woman says love is the strongest force in the world, and no amount of money can ever buy or stop it.

Summary
The young woman wishes she could show her love for her beloved openly, like a sister and brother can hug in public without it being strange. She wants to bring him home to her mother's house. She asks him to hold her close and not to rush love before it is ready. Then she says something very powerful. She says love is as strong as death, nothing can stop it. It burns like a blazing flame. She says even a flood of water cannot put out this love. And no amount of money could ever buy it. True love cannot be purchased. The chapter ends with a short conversation about a younger sister who is still growing up. The woman talks about her own vineyard, the one that truly belongs to her. Then she calls out to her beloved one last time, asking him to come quickly like a gazelle over the mountains.

Historical Context

In ancient times, brothers and sisters could show affection in public, but men and women who were not yet married were expected to keep their feelings more private. The young woman wishing to show her love openly shows how much she wanted everyone to know about their relationship.

The declaration that love is 'as strong as death' was one of the most powerful things anyone could say in the ancient world. Death was seen as an unstoppable force. Saying love matches it meant love was the most powerful thing a person could experience.
